Worklog

Many people mock the American automobile industry overseas, saying that we lack any real muscle anymore. Fortunately, Ford's 2006 redo of the good old Mustang has been a hit across the world. Done with the weird body shapes and back to the classic muscle, it's been popular in both the US and the EU.

That may be why new forumite DªrK~3n3rG¥ saw the car as such a great project idea. His case build, dubbed "GTR", is a homage to true muscle-car splendour, and tries to use several of the same thick, bold lines as its inspiration. The case is huge, and made of plexiglass and MDF - so it's not about to be trucking to a whole lot of LAN parties. However, if his designs are anything to go by, we may just be seeing more of it even if it isn't as mobile as a Mustang.

Like all good mods, GTR is starting off with a plan. You can see the heavy muscle-car inspiration in his design, which looks strong and well thought out.

DªrK~3n3rG¥ started his mod off with some MDF. Since the store didn't quite carry the thickness he needed, a couple sheets were glued together to create the desired effect. After some router and hole saw work, the front panel was already starting to take shape. For those of you who haven't worked with MDF before, here's a tip - if you don't know how to control the speed of your tools, it can quickly be an awful material to work with.

Fortunately, it looks like DªrK~3n3rG¥ doesn't have that problem. Though there were a couple visible power-tool burns, some good primer and paint will get rid of them. You can already start to see the case beginning to come together under his design, with the front panel almost complete (including mandatory huge-@$$ fans and Bulgin vandal-resistant switches).

With the basic shape of each piece in check, it's time to start fusing them together. Rather than just relying on the odd screw and some glue, DªrK~3n3rG¥ has opted to go the right way with L-brackets for some additional strength. It appears he's taken a tip from the pros though on measuring out a worklog. All we're left with until his next instalment is this wonderfully blurry picture, given to us as a teaser. That may be a little while, though - in the basic design assumptions for his mod, he puts in: "BUT, sadly I don’t have to much money so it will take a while before being finished."

Hopefully, that's not entirely true. I guess we'll have to wait until he uploads his worklog to find out more!
